Description
"Bharatanatyam" is one of India's 8 exquisite classical dance forms. It originated in southern India in the state of Tamilnadu. It started as a temple dance tradition called Dasiyattam (the dance of the maid-servants) 2000 years ago.
This pose is symbolic of Nataraja, the dancing form of Lord Shiva. Nataraja means "King of Dancers" (Sanskrit nata = dance; raja = king). In this form, Shiva dances Anandatandava, the Dance of Bliss, symbolizing the cosmic cycles of creation and dissolution, as well as the daily rhythm and harmony of life, of birth and death. The purpose of this dance, it is believed, is to release humankind from ignorance and the snare of illusion of the "self."
It is said that the name BHARATAnatyam combines "BHAvam" meaning expression, "RAgam" meaning music and "TAalam" meaning rhythm.
Seen here is my original artwork, staying true to my signature style of drawing. Its drawn with fine-liner pens on paper.
